Best hot cross buns for Easter 2025, taste-tested

[ad_1]

Spring came up and brought some of my favorite seasonal snacks. From the struggling roasted lamb to indulgent Easter eggs, the spring holiday has a serious good NOSH for us to get our teeth fast. For me, however, there is one tempting delicacy that trumps everyone: the humble warm crossball.

Sweet, spicy buns filled with berries and sultanas, these sweet treats have been a staple in British homes since the 1700s, with some evidence that suggests that some of the Bun can be traced back to England in the 12th century.

Hot Cross Buns had a bit of a takeover today. Almost every supermarket and bakery nationwide now offer its own approach to the classic, with flavors ranging from savory cheese to tart rhubarb and custard. However, if you are a Hot Cross Bun purist, there are still many lenient classic options offered.

For the second year in a row, I tasted hard and tasted every bun under the sun to find the best hot crossballs offered this season. Keep browsing for my full review and pronunciation.

How I tested

I have had a hot crossball in the past two months

It was a very difficult testing process, but someone had to do it. I sampled a number of different hot crossballs and enjoyed a different taste every day. I roasted the buns and tried unnoticed, with butter and without, to make sure I covered all bases. I was looking for those who roasted well on the outside, but stayed on the inside fluff and damp. I wanted a lot of fillings and even judge how well they kept in the closet after a few days.

This is the second year I rounded off the best hot crossballs, which is a lot of numerous supply test. I am a sticker when it comes to how spiced a dough is, and I refuse to include any balls that shuffle on the fillings.
