The initial fire and emergency investigation indicated that the fire was triggered by a charger who ran over a lithium battery while gathering material last week.
Queenstown Lakes District Council said the fire threatened the Drive Glenda Recycling Building after a similar incident in its Victoria Flat landfill two weeks ago.
The District Council of Queenstown Lakes, Laura Gledhill, said the fire served as a reminder of the dangers of inadequate battery elimination.
“Batteries, in particular, those that contain lithium, can easily light up, especially when damaged,” she said. “We ask everyone to be sure that they recycle or safely discard their batteries at designated delivery points to prevent this from happening again.
“Never throw a battery in any trash. Although the source of this particular fire could not be confirmed, it is highly likely to be a battery and this is a risk that we cannot afford to ignore.”
The board said 12 of the 13 waste -related fires last year were probably linked to batteries, which had a serious impact on landfills, transfer stations, recycling deposits and garbage trucks.
