The figures are based on data from consumer card spending from Barclays Debit Card and Barclaycard credit card transactions.
Karen Johnson, head of the retail at Barclays, said: “Ease is the driving force behind contactless technology that is so embedded in the UK’s payment ecosystem. The increasing incidence of self-service screens in retail and hospitality rooms shows the importance of a smooth experience, regardless of the sector.
“However, contactless transactions cannot completely replace the human interaction. Businesses directed by the consumer must continue to recognize the value that staff members can offer in the store when it comes to promoting customer relationships and trust.”
