Bangkok felt it broke out in chaos when the tremor hit.
No one knew what was going on and there was no warning.
In a city where lives are lived, there were suddenly irreconcilable attractions in the air – pools that are abundant, with high hiking trails that broke expensive apartments apart, and some confused and scared people outside offices.

My producer Rachael and I had to share a motorcycle to collapse at the scene of the worst building – a slow route through the wrong traffic.
Upon arrival, the devastation was clear. A mass of junk, a sea of rescue workers and panic -stricken viewers.
We were told that 90 construction workers were still trapped inside.
One of the men who tried to save them told me that he had heard some votes and that they hope they could pull people out alive.
But he acknowledged that it was “very difficult” work, and while he spoke, we were engulfed with dust, the light that had already faded, while the specialist bulldozers were brought in.
We said that many of the inside of the inside of the Cambodas were about to build the structure.

Why no warnings?
When the rescue effort continued, Thailand’s Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra suddenly showed up.
I asked her why there were no warnings – in a nation that had a devastating earthquake 20 years ago.
She didn’t answer.
But many will undoubtedly continue to push her government on why there was no emergency warning system, no texts, nothing. At least not hours after that.

On the ground Bangkok felt like a city caught off guard.
There is now fear of aftershocks – while the government is moving quickly to ensure that there will be warnings next time.
But in a place where the skyline is dominated by high apartments, buildings and offices, there is now a sense of vulnerability.
And there are questions about the integrity of their structures and what can be done to protect a population of more than 17 million people.
