Australian Sailgp boat crew is unharmed even though its sailing wing is sensationally collapsed in San Francisco.
The three times champions, which have already qualified for the three -boat final in the San Francisco Grand Prix, suffered the dramatic collapse of the wing when they approached the line to begin the seventh fleet race of the event.
The flying roo suddenly stopped when the rubble crashed into the boat and to the water.
Speaking after the water, the driver of Australia Tom Slingsby confirmed that no team member were injured, but the incident was a “shock.”
“It was a very frightening situation, we are all unharmed and well, but when something like this happens, you just think, ‘Are everyone to overcome this?'”
He added that the team’s priority was now ensuring that the boat was repaired in time to run in Rio in May.
“We have to save the boat as much as we can,” he said.
“Obviously, the results and points are what they are. We are not worried about that. It’s just about saving the boat.”
The cause of the incident is not yet clear. The wing collapsed just above the lower section, similar to the New Zealand boat in St Tropez in season 4, which made this team lose two events.
With Australia outside, France entered the final against Spain and Canada.
Spain, the defending series champion, won the final to claim his first victory of the season.
Despite the strong blow, Australia moved to the top of the championship table with 39 points, a point ahead of Great Britain, which ended seventh because she could not recover after splacing in the sixth race.
