A devastating return of former world number Elena Rybakina has seen Australia fall against the defeat of the Billie Jean King Cup against Kazakhstan in Brisbane.
Rybakina was a break in the first set and two breaks in the second, but still returned to beat Australia number one Kim Birrell 6-3, 7-6 (7/4) in the second rubber after Yulia Putintseva beat the Mayan adolescent in Maya, 6-2, 6-1.
The defeat in both rubbers of singles, almost eliminates the Australians from the containment of the Billie Jean King Cup later in the year, with Kazakhstan only needs to beat Colombia to ensure that they exceed group D and progress to the late eight teams in Shenzhen, China.
The Australians will be desperate to win what could be a valuable point in the doubles with Storm Hunter and Ellen Pérez, although they will admit that their chances of doing the last eight are now a long shot.

After dropping the first set against Rybakina, Birrell led 5-1 and had a fixed point in the service to take it to a decisive.
But Wimbledon’s champion of 2022 suddenly woke up, recovered four consecutive games and breaking Birrell twice to put the 5-5.
The Queenslanders Birrell defended themselves admirably to claim the next game to love, but Rybakina, classified, responded in kind to send it to a tiebreaker.
