Cameron Percy has left behind the disappointment of consecutive Bogeys to jointly lead the Galleri classic with the great German Bernhard Langer.
The Australian triggered a five bass 67 to tie Langer and directed by one in a classification table in Rancho Mirage in California.
Percy went happily at six bass with birdies in the second, fourth, ninth, tenth, 11 and 14 holes when he came awake.
He made a bogey in 16th place to go back to five below before sliding again in the next hole, where he left another blow.
But the Victorian regrouped, and with a portion of luck, he intervened in the closing hole of the five to make Birdie.
“It’s really difficult. You have to choose your shot, and if you go through the wind, you are in all kinds of problems,” said the 50 -year -old man.
“Fortunately for me, I drove it well and was coming to streets so that it made a big difference.”
Meanwhile, Langer triggered his age once again and with Percy has a single shot over the trio of Jason Caron, Thongchai Jaidee of Thailand and the Australian Richard Green.
Langer, 67, has already shot or broken his age three times this season. Friday’s round, a Fogey free circuit with five Birdies, was its 27th time achieving the feat in the PGA Tour champions.
“I hope to inspire other people,” said Langer. “Some say: ‘Oh, I am too old, I can no longer improve,’ I still think of his 50 years that he can still improve, perhaps even in his 60 depending on what level he is playing because golf is very technical.
“Obviously, now I am much shorter and I cannot follow the rhythm of young people, but it is very technical, it is very mental and it is a lot of a short game in which you do not need strength, you only need a great touch.”
Langer and the rest of the field dealt with the challenge of strong and rotating winds.
“He hits some decent shots and didn’t have to stir too much,” he said. “I had a good shot by bunker on 17, hit the flag; that could have gone a few meters in another way. He had a good opportunity in 18 to go underneath and did not succeed. Very solid day.”
While Langer has won a record 47 times at the PGA Tour Champions, Percy is in search of his first title. He made most of his career in Australia and had a victory on the web.com (now known as Korn Ferry Tour).
The Australian Steve Allan, Stephen Ames de Canada and Chilean Felipe Aguilar are tied in sixth place in three low 69, with another Australian Stuart Appleby a blow to the ninth tied.
