Last month, it was confirmed that the team and event arm of Auckland Council, Tātaki Auckland Unlimited (Tau), were interested in holding the event in Aotearoa.
Today, however, in a statement, the New Zealand team said that “it was exploring the possibility of hosting the 38th America Cup in the city, with the necessary understanding for a combination of private support, local government and central government support to make it happen, but not at the expense of financing other priorities in the difficult economic climate.”
The New Zealand team said it was disappointed, but understood why the government made its decision.
“The team had comfort at the private support level and has been working with Tātaki Auckland Unlimited, which has proactively led the offer. So, it is with disappointment and understanding listening to MBie [Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment] And the central government decided not to support the 38th America Cup in Auckland in 2027.
“Although the significant economic benefits of hosting the America and other important events are well proven, such as $ 1.9 billion in economic benefits in Barcelona in 2024, we understand that there are other priorities for the New Zealand government at the moment.”
The New Zealand team successfully defended the title of the American Cup in Barcelona last year.
Auckland’s Tātaki Auckland Unlimited has also released a statement confirming that Auckland will not host New Zealand’s next defense of the Auld mug.
“America’s Cup is a fantastic sporting event that offers significant benefits to the city and the host country, so it is with great disappointment that Tātaki Auckland Unlimited confirms that Auckland cannot continue with an attempt to host Next America’s Cup 38 in 2027.
“Auckland’s offer depended on a three -way funding partnership between the Auckland Council, the central government and the private sector. MBIe informed Tau that the government cannot provide the necessary funds and, based on the basis, the offer cannot continue.
“The TAU team worked incredibly hard to try to make this opportunity work for Auckland; we already have the infrastructure and experience in major events in force and we really wanted to host our sailors in domestic waters.”
Auckland Council said it would support hosting any future Copa de America events in the region.
