Low levels of and coli were detected at a drinking water test site in Palmerston North.
Palmerston North’s city council said in a statement that there was no need for people to do something differently, but they are informing the public in the name of transparency.
“The city’s drinking water safety plan requires only a public notification if the levels are five times higher than this reading, but transparency is important to us, which is why we are keeping you informed,” he said in a statement.
A sample taken on Wednesday afternoon showed a very low presence of bacteria – just above the detectable levels.
The advice said all other tests, including chlorine levels throughout the city yesterday, returned normal results.
He said that given yesterday’s rainy and suction cup conditions, external environmental factors may have contaminated the sample causing a false positive.
Other test results would be available on Friday afternoon due to a standard 24-hour turnaround.
