A 24-year-old American tourist was detained in India for entering a remote tribal area where islanders have no contact with the outside world, police said on Wednesday.
Mykhailo Viktorovych Polyakov, whose father comes from Ukraine, fed a foot at North Sentinel Island, part of India’s Andaman Islands, in an attempt to make contact with the isolated Sentinelese tribe, police said.
He recorded his visit to the island and left a can of Coke and a coconut on the shore as an ‘offer’ to the people of the tribe.
The influencer, who runs a YouTube channel that documents extreme travel and previously visited Taliban-controlled Afghanistan, traveled nine hours in a small rubber jolle with an outboard car to reach the island and use a binoculars to investigate the area but saw no residents.
He tried to get the indigenous people’s attention by blowing a whistle and landing on the shore for a few minutes before leaving. He left the offers and collected sand samples while recorded a video, police said.
He arrived in the capital, Port Blair, on March 27 and was arrested three days later on Sunday after being reported to police by residents, who saw him taking a boat to North Sentinel Island.
Andaman and Nicobar, a former British penalty colony, are a group of 572 islands located more than 1,200 km (700 million) from the continent of India. The Indian government is monitoring strict access to some remote parts of the federal area, which is home to five well -known indigenous tribes, some of which are hostile to outsiders.
These tribes, including the Sentinelese, Jarwa, unmarried, Shompens and Groot Andamanese, and are one of the world’s last remaining isolated communities.
Indians and foreigners are prohibited from traveling within 3 miles (5 km) of the island within 5 km of the island to protect the indigenous population from external diseases and protect their way of life.
Andaman and Nicobar director General HS Dhaliwal said police were warned after residents saw the man near the Khuramadera beach in southern Andaman, relatively close to the Jarwa Reserve Forest, which is a protected area for the indigenous Jarwa tribe.
“We get more details about him and his intention to visit the reserved tribal area. We also try to find out where he visited during his stay in Andaman and Nicobar Islands. We question the hotel staff where he stayed in Port Blair,” police told Press Trust of India.
Mr. Dhaliwal told AFP that the American tourist “landed briefly for about five minutes, left offers on the shore, collected sand samples and recorded a video before returning to his boat”.

A formal complaint is registered against him in terms of the Foreign Affairs Act, 1946, and to enter a tribal reserve or limited area without permission.
Mr. Polyakov was reportedly on his third trip to the islands after visiting twice last year. Police said they had notified the Ministry of Home Affairs about his detention and that officials were in contact with the US embassy.
Tribal countries are legally protected by the Andaman & Nicobar Islands (protection of the Aboriginal tribes), 1956, which prohibits unauthorized entry.
In 2018, American missionary John Allen Chau, 27, was killed by Sentinelese, an endangered tribe, after trying to illegally enter their territory to proclaim Christianity. He was allegedly killed after Tribespeople shot him with arrows as his boat approached the island.
In 2006, two Indian fishermen who accidentally drove to the North Ventel Island were killed by the Sentinelean tribe. When an Indian military helicopter later flyed low across the island, tribal members fired arrows in a display of resistance.
The fleet has since maintained a three -mile buffer zone around the island, ensuring that no outsiders come close.
