The frustrated Alex de Minaur has had the most scorching spell of his career on the clay courts sprayed in the semifinals of the Mount-Carlo Masters, going down in a match to bite his nails with the Italian Lorenzo Musetti.
Seeking to become the first Australian from John Newcombe in 1969 to reach the final of the prestigious Masters 1000 event, from Minaur appeared in progress for victory after passing beyond Musetti 6-1 in the first set.
But as the rain began to retire and cause a short break to play, De Minaur’s magic spell abandoned him in the middle of a brilliant return of Musetti, cheered the beams for a huge Italian contingent in the Rainier III Court, and the Australian finally succumbed 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) in two hours, 38 minutes.
It meant that the number 10 of the Minaur world was lost a second final of the year against Carlo Alcaraz, its conqueror in the confrontation of the Rotterdam Open in February, since the Spanish had previously defeated the compatriot Alejandro Davidovich-Fokina 7-6 (7-2) 6-4 in the other Semi.
De Minaur had enjoyed a fantastic week in Monte-Carlo, with a 6-0, 6-0 victory in the quarterfinals over Grigor Dimitrov and a 6-2, 6-2 Daniil Medvedev’s blow in the last 16.
