The Alberta government is raising funds from two organizations in major cities across the province to address growing anti-Semitic hatred.
Community and Social Services Secretary Jason Nixon announced on Friday that $200,000 was announced to the Jewish of Edmonton and Calgary in Edmonton and Calgary in order to combat the shocking rise of anti-Semitism. ”
“These two unions play an important role in educating Alberta about Jewish culture and building vibrant, dedicated and connected Jewish communities in the province,” a press release said. “This investment supports the federal efforts to combat anti-Semitism through education and promoting the International Holocaust Memorial Union.”
The government said the money will be used for the Alberta Anti-Semitism Conference, as well as scholarships, educational materials and conferences with government and law enforcement personnel.
The announcement was observed shortly before the Holocaust anniversary and later this month. B’nai Brith Canada reported a record-breaking 6,219 anti-Semitism incidents nationwide last year, partly by the Israeli-Hamas war in Gaza on October 7, 2023.
