Ajla Tomljanović through to Austin semifinals as Daria Saville triumphs in Mexico



Australia Ajla Tomljanović and Daria Saville have advanced to the semifinals of their respective WTA Tour events.

In Austin, Texas, Tomljanović claimed a dramatic victory in the quarterfinals on Saturday AEDT.

And in Mexico, the qualifier Daria Saville advanced to the last four of the Mérida Open when the Spanish Paula Badosa, the second seed, was forced to retire.

Tomljanović increased a 5-2 advantage in the final set of its quarterfinals against Ena Shibahara, but needed eight game points to get the victory.

The Japanese qualifier, who had bothered Kim Birrell Australian in the previous round, took Tomljanović to a final tiebreaker.

But Tomljanović closed the game to win 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (10/8) after more than two and a half hours in the court.

Tomljanović faces the best seed Jessica Pegula, who scored a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Russian Anna Blinkova.

World number 111 Tomljanović received a wild card from the event.

Saville, classified 121, continued 1-6, 5-3 when Badosa retired with a back injury.

Then he plays the Colombian qualifier Emiliana Arango.

Saville’s victory held the Australian flag flying in Mexico, after the sensation of adolescents Maya Joint was completed by the number 45 of the world Elina Avanesyan.
