Donald Trump unmistakably had a ‘big effect’ on the world’s changing safety landscape, a Cabinet minister told Sky News.
Talk about the Politics with Sophy RidgeThe Chancellor of Duchy Lancaster, Pat McFadden, said the ‘international security position has changed naturally in recent months’ – and the US president was ‘part of the change’.
Chancellor Rachel Reeves referred to this changing world in her spring statement on Wednesday, demanding that this be the reason why the government had to protect Britain’s future.

She said it started with the war in Ukraine, but it “increased further – and still developed rapidly”.
Mr. McFadden was asked what has changed in the world since then, and whether the inauguration of Mr. In January, Trump can blame what he called a changing ‘international security position’.
He told Sky News: “Of course he is part of the change. There is no denial that it is not denied.”
However, the Minister of Cabinet once again said that the US president is “not the whole change”.
“He said that Europe should act in his safety. He is not the first US president to say that,” Mr McFadden said.
“The question has definitely become sharper in recent weeks.”

Mr. McFadden further said that he “cannot deny” that Mr. Trump ‘is part of what’s going on’.
“It had a big effect,” he said.
“But for us and for other countries, it will mean that we have to take greater responsibility for our own safety.”
His comments came when Sir Keir Starmer promised to ‘keep all options on the table’ after Mr. Trump imposed a 25% tariff on all imported cars in the US.
The president signed an executive order on Wednesday for the tax to kick in on April 2 – what he called ‘Liberation Day’.
The move is the global trade war that Mr Trump activated after entering the White House for a second term.
The Prime Minister spoke in Paris on Thursday and described the rates as ‘many concerning’ and said that the UK ‘will keep all options on the table’ and ‘put the national interest first’.
