In just two years, the SpaceX Starship is due to land people on the lunar surface – and if you believe that Elon is Musk, a mission begins to Mars.
So it is an important setback for the rocket to explode so spectacularly – and in public – For the second time in so many months.

The company has already made design changes in response to the Failure of test flight seven in January.
The investigation concluded that vibrations emphasized hardware in the drive system, which leaked and exploded.
The federal aviation administration was satisfied that the engineering upgrades meet its safety requirements.
But again, there was a failure and the company started a second investigation using video from inside the rocket and system data that led to the explosion.

Flights would shoot up this year, with 25 planned – all increasingly ambitious.

For such a large rocket to reach the moon, it must be filled before it leaves the Earth’s orbit.
Thus, more than half a dozen ‘tanker’ versions of Starship should be launched, and the propellant then pumped into the rocket to the moon.
There, it will revolve to wait for astronauts to get on Nasa’s Race Launch System (SLS) rocket, and then take it to the lunar surface.
But a safe landing on the robust terrain of the moon’s South Pole is far from guaranteed, as the onslaught of Thursday by Athena spaces of the intuitive machines is an adjustment. It seems to have fallen over.
NASA and SpaceX must push hard to strike China back to the moon in a search for water and minerals.

And Elon Musk talked about sending the first unspoken star ship to Mars in 2027 and the astronauts shortly thereafter.
But there is a risk. The spacecraft was one of the most complicated machines ever built. One blew on the launch, another with the return to earth. Both were the result of hardware failures.
NASA is more risk acceleration these days. That’s why the ‘stranded’ astronauts were Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams held at the International Space Station Rather than driving home on the Boeing spacecraft.
It has yet to be seen whether the space agency is under increasing pressure from Donald Trump’s administration to take more risks to win the space race.
But it certainly does not want to place its astronauts on a rocket that just isn’t ready.
