Cook Cook Erin Patterson’s mushroom husband denied asking her if she used a dehydrator to poison her relatives days after a fatal meal in Australia.
Patterson, 50, is accused of murdering his in -laws, Don and Gail, and Gail’s sister Heather Wilkinson.
She faced the fifth day of a trial at the Supreme Court jury in the second regional Victoria.
During his third day at the booth, Simon Patterson was asked about his interactions with his wife and children while at Monash Medical Center on Monday, July 31, in 2023.
Two days earlier, Patterson had served a poisonous mushroom meal at his home in Leongatha before taking herself and her children to the hospital after recommendations of health professionals.
While in the hospital, the couple talked about a Patterson dehydrator had already used to hide mushrooms inside muffins due to their daughter’s aversion for them.
Defense attorney Colin Mandy, SC, put to Simon that he had asked Erin: “Is that what you used to poison them?”
“I didn’t say that to Erin,” he replied from the witness box.
The 15 -year -old jury received messages from a family group chat between Simon, his ex -Espais and his parents – in December 2022 – after he claimed last week that she had sent “extremely aggressive” messages.
This included messages in which she said she was “unconscious” that Simon was not paying half of her children’s school rates because of her alimony payments.
“Both parents have a duty to financially support the children who have done,” Patterson said in the group chat.
The accused told Don and Gail that she wanted to raise awareness of what was happening and “encourage Simon to do the right thing for her children.”
“However, if you do not want to get involved, even in that extent, I respect that and find a way to manage this situation on my own,” she said in the chat.
The alleged “aggressive” messages were not shown to the jury.
Simon said a message came after contacting his wife directly about his son not sleeping enough.
“She sent a message to the group talking about it, and that’s the message I had in mind, which was extremely inflammatory,” he told the jury.
“It was very emotional, having a cracking on me and accusing me of some things in response to what I sent her sent.”
Previously, Mandy showed the jury messages where Don and Gail tried to help them in their alimony dispute.
“Where we can contribute is to encourage you to reopen communication and take some small steps of reconciliation,” Don Patterson told Nora on December 6, 2022.
“I encourage you to look for solutions (no problems/accusations, etc.).”
But in the following months, Simon said his parents began to retreat when his mother fought with anxiety since he was diagnosed with encephalitis.
“These are messages that made Mom and Dad agree that Mom wouldn’t read any of Erin’s messages,” he told the jury.
Patterson stated innocent of the three murder charges and tried to murder of Uncle Ian Wilkinson, the only lunch survivor guest.
His defense said what happened was “a tragedy and a terrible accident.”
Simon was dismissed from the Witness Box as the trial at the Latrobe Valley courts in Morwell, 150 km from Melbourne, continues before Judge Christopher Beale.
