Winnipeg Jets captain Adam Lowry was besieged by teammates as white riding fans stood and roared to win overtime in a 16:10 doubles overtime game, 4-3 against the St. Louis Blues in Game 7 Sunday.
The Jets will face the Dallas star in the second round of the Western Conference playoffs that began in the Manitoba capital on Wednesday. Winnipeg has never played a star in the playoffs.
This was the third-longest game in NHL history, when it was 96 minutes and 10 seconds.
Winnipeg fell 3-1 in the third stage, when veteran forward Vladislav Namestnikov had 1:56 left after his shot hit Bruce defensive player Ryan Suter.
With goalkeeper Connor Hellebuyck pulling up for the extra attacker, Winnipeg looks like he has 1:06 left to tie it up, but comments ruled that the puck didn’t cross the goal line.
Cole Perfetti then scored his second redirection goal for the game, leaving three seconds left to lift 15,225 crazy white dressed fans out of their seats inside the Canadian Living Center. Kyle Connor and Neal Pionk both provided three assists for the Jets.
Winnipeg played a 6:20 strong match until St. Louis captain Brayden Schenn was asked to postpone the game. The Jets tried to knock the puck down in the crease, but goalkeeper Jordan Binnington covered it up.
Binnington also stopped winger Nikolaj Ehlers from leaving. In the first extra session, the Jets beat Blues 11-4.
Hellebuyck scored 26 saves. The finalists of Vezina and Hart Trophy received support from Eric Comrie in the first three games, but made some key savings on Sunday.
The Jets lost top guard Josh Morrissey, about eight minutes later. They no longer have star center Mark Scheifele (upper body injury) for the second straight game.
Winnipeg won the team’s first presidential trophy after having a league-best 56-22-4 regular season record and is a favorite for the eighth seed Blues.
The Jets led 2-0 in the seventh series but ultimately hosted Game 7 of the city.
Jordan Kyrou scored in the first inning of the Blues, while Mathieu Joseph and Radek Faksa also scored goals for the visitors. Binnington made 43 saves.
Kyrou and Colton Parayko scored 1:10 after running. Kyrou passed the hockey past the front of the net to Parayko, who passed the hockey back, and Kyrou poked with the outstretched Hellebuyck. It marks the fastest goal to start Game 7 in Blues history.
Joseph scored 2-0 after dropping a loose puck in the neutral zone. Joseph used Morrissey as the screen and shot his wrist at Hellebuyck on the side of the stick at 7:16.
Shortly after the goal, Morrissey participated in the seasoning. Earlier in the game, he was hit on the board by Bruce striker Oskar Sundqvist and seemed to be painful when sitting on the bench. He did not come back.
The Jets missed a few chances early in the second phase, but got the first strong game of the game and quickly digitized it.
Seven seconds after Sundqvist was asked to cut, Connor sent the puck to Perfetti online and Whitby, Ontario, which Binnington redirected at 11:41.
St. Louis regained a two-goal lead after Ehlers lost their hockey, while Faksa beat Hellebuyck’s tall glove with 34.1 seconds left in the second second.
Playoffs passed
Winnipeg/Atlanta Thrashers franchise is now 2-8 all-time in the face of knockouts. Another win came in Game 7 of the second round series against the Nashville Predators in 2018.
This is St. Louis’ 19th game and the most of any non-original NHL club. The franchise is now 10-9.
