Celebrating Waitangi Day with a special Google Doodle

[ad_1]

Today we are celebrating Waitangi Day in New Zealand with a special Google Doodle! Illustrated by the guest artist Jordan Tuura, from Tuatahi Creative, Doodle beautifully captures the essence of this important day.

It focuses on the themes of Rangatratanga (Leadership) and partnership, reflecting the spirit of Te Tirita O Waitangi (The Treaty of Waitangi) signed on February 6, 1840. It also symbolizes the continuous journey of New Zealand towards unity and understanding.

On Google, we recognize the meaning of Waitangi Day to the history of Aotearoa and its role as the basis for the country’s diverse landscape. We have celebrated Waitangi Day through Google Doodles since 2018, with each year’s art works by offering a unique interpretation of the positivity and unity that the treaty represents.

In the heart of our scribbling of 2025, two figures representing Maori and the British crown get involved in a Hongi, a traditional maori greeting that means sharing life and connection. They are flanked by four powerful Pou (sculpted figures) standing as guardians, representing the strength and resilience of the Maori people.

Doodle perfectly combines traditional forms of Maori art with modern digital techniques. It serves as a powerful reminder of the partnership in the heart of Waitangi Day and New Zealand’s commitment to build a future in which different cultures coexist in harmony.

We devote to celebrating and preserving the culture, language and stories of Maori and helping the global audience to learn about them. From support to Te Reo Maori in our products to the presentation of Aotearoa beauty through initiatives such as Google Doodle, we strive to honor the unique inheritance of New Zealand and share it with the world.
