Hamas has said that after an Israeli strike there was “lost contact” with the captors of an American Israeli hostage in Gaza, whose launch supposedly occupies a central place in Israel’s last proposal for a high renewed fire.
Abu Ubaida, spokesman for the military wing of Hamas, the Ezzed Al-Qassam brigades, said in a statement on Telegram during the night, lost the contact after the Israeli army attacked the place where the militants held Alexander, who is a native of New Jersey and a 21-year-old soldier in the Israeli army.
Ubaida did not say in which part of Gaza Alexander was supposedly sustained. The military wing later launched a video aimed at the families of the remaining hostages, warning them that their loved ones would probably return in the coffins if Israel maintained its bombing of the territory.
Hamas has previously blamed Israel for the death of the hostages held in Gaza, even as a direct result of military operations, while recognizing at least one occasion that a guard killed a hostage for a guard. He said the guard had acted against the instructions.
There was no immediate response from the Israeli army to a request for comments on Hamas’ statement on Alexander.
The special envoy of the president of the United States, Donald Trump, Steve Witkoff, told journalists in the White House in March to obtain the liberation of Alexander, who is believed to be the last American hostage living in the hands of Hamas in Gaza, it was a “priority for us.”
On Saturday, Hamas launched a video that allegedly showed Alexander, who was held in Gaza since he was captured by militants on October 7, 2023.
Alexander’s release was at the Center for Conversations held between the leaders of Hamas and the United States hostage negotiator, Adam Boehler, last month.
Hamas launched 38 hostages under a high fire that began on January 19. In March, Israel’s army resumed his terrain and aerial offensive in Gaza, abandoning the high fire after Hamas rejected the proposals to extend the truce without finishing the war.
Israeli officials say that the offensive will continue until the remaining 59 hostages are released and Gaza is demilitarized. Hamas says that he will release the hostages only as part of an agreement to end the war and has rejected the demands of leaving his arms.
