Waihi Beach Surf Surf Lifesaving says the community has come together to help put sand bags on the surf club before the forecast of heavy rains.
Strong rain and strong winds should hit the northern island of Upper from Wednesday, with the expected damp sky for much of the country for the rest of the week.
A warning of heavy orange rain was in force for the Plenty West of Kawerau Bay until the Friday half -year, with methservice predicting 120 to 180 mm of rain inside and smaller rain closer to the coast.
The director of members and communications Natalie Lloyd said the surf club was hit by flooding in the past.
“We have been flooded, flooded, very seriously a few times in recent years, so we definitely do preventive actions to ensure that we can do everything we can to prevent the club from being flooded,” she said.
She said the community’s response was exciting.
“We have an amazing community on Waihi beach,” Lloyd said.
“We love the fact that if we make a call, which we do not often do it, but if we do, the community gathers so quickly and generously with its time and effort.”
Lloyd said they had surf club residents within 15 minutes after launching the call.
“The work was done a lot, very quickly, everything is complete,” said Lloyd.
She said that those who go to the beach over the weekend should exert a tremendous caution.
“It is probably out of the water, the forecast is for large waves, huge surf on the east coast, especially in Coromandel and Waihi beach,” she said.
“We will have save patrols -vids on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday, but the rescue -living will probably be warning people about the conditions we would imagine.”
