Bryan Adams obtained his first real six -string guitar after the summer of ’69, and was not from a cheap store.
The 65-year-old singer and composer is probably better known for his 1985 successful outbreak ‘Summer of’ 69 ‘, launched when he was 26 years old, in which he sang on obtaining his “First Real Six-String” the same year as in the title of the song, of a store “Five and tell me”.
Now he has told the true story of how he obtained his first guitar during an appearance in the podcast ‘I never thought it would happen’, presented by Chris Difford de Squeeze.
While the lyrics of his 1985 ‘Summer of’ 69 ‘paints a simple purchase in a local discount store, Bryan admitted about how reality was very different: “I said (my uncle) that I wanted to buy an electric guitar, and it took me to the music store in Reading and I still have that electric guitar. It’s an Italian thing … It’s an electric Stratocaster.”
Bryan said the purchase came when he was visiting his uncle in Reading, England, when he was 12 years old.
In 1969, I would only have been 10 years.
At that time, his family was frequently in motion due to his father’s diplomatic publication with the Canadian embassy.
Later they lived for a year in Israel, where Bryan gave the guitar to a neighbor before returning to Canada and buying a replacement.
“I thought, ‘Ugh, why did I do that?'” He said.
Years later, a surprise email returned the guitar.
Bryan said: “I received a random email from someone who said: ‘Hey, I have your 1970 guitar. Do you want it back?’ And I was like, ‘Whoa.
The sender never continued, and Bryan assumed that the guitar had gone forever, until a casual match in a club in Berlin around a decade later.
He said about running with the person with his guitar: “I said: ‘What?’ He says: “I have the guitar of your childhood.
“I said: ‘Wait a minute, are you the guy who wrote to me in ’94?’ And he said ‘No, I’m your friend.
Bryan added: “It is the most stupid story, but it is what happened.”
Although the instrument has been altered since then, Bryan has not bothered to restore it.
He said: “I tried to play it several times, but I think it has been modified in the neck … it’s just there. Just a piece of history.”
The song ‘Summer of’ 69 ‘, co -written with Jim Vallance, is not autobiographical for any of the musicians.
On his website, Jim previously stated that his own guitar was a Christmas gift in 1965.
Bryan has also recognized the double meaning of the track.
In a 2008 interview with ‘The Early Show’, he said: “Many people think it’s about the year. But in reality, it’s more about making love in summer. He is using ’69 as a sexual reference.”
