The decision of a coroner disclosed today found that the accidental death of the 7-month-old baby-it cannot be identified-caused by circumstances that parents were hardly aware.
The baby was growing well and lived in a healthy home environment with his own crib in his own room.
After a family dinner, he was placed in his crib at night around 8 pm, wrapped in his usual musline cloth.
The decision said that there was nothing unusual at night and it was normal for the baby to sleep all night.
However, when his mother checked him around 7:20 am, he was found in prison between the mattress and the lower sliding rail cache out of his track. The upper cache and sliding rail were still stuck.
Does not respond, an ambulance was called. The ambulance team believed that the mattress protector had tightened around the baby’s neck.
The baby was rushed to the hospital, but died tragically later that day.
He was found to die of hypoxic brain injury and asphyxiation due to an lost sliding side of the crib.
The coroner Seng Youn recognized the immense sadness of parents and said that the circumstances of his death fell well outside any general council of safe sleeping practices.
“I am satisfied [suppressed] Death was a tragic accident.
“Evidence before me supports the conclusion that the mother (from the baby) was aware and followed the general practices of safe sleep.
“It was the lost sliding side of the cradle that created a gap and made him arrested. I recognize that (his) mother was unlikely to be aware of the wrong sliding side that caused a gap between the cradle side and the mattress,” said the outline player.
The coroner said that while the Ministry of Health has published guidelines around safe sleep, messages around the structural integrity of COTS should be included.
“To emphasize that a small gap between the side of the bed and the mattress caused by lost sliding sides can increase the risk of fatality, the message of safe sleeping practices should always include the message that the structural integrity of COTS should be checked regularly to ensure that no gaps can be created between the sides of the bed and the mattress,” the Corner said.
The Ministry of Health acknowledged that this was not included in its messages, but recommended that it be added to its last review.
Plunket New Zealand told the coroner that the organization strengthened their on -line messages and in resources provided to families around the verification of the structure of the COTS.
Hāpai Te Haura, the Unexpected National Coordination Service of Childhood Death (SUDI), also told the coroner that the organization supports the recommendation and is currently preparing revised messages in their training packages and education sessions.
