Shapiro said he and his family woke up just after 02:00 to pass on the state police after an unknown person set fire to the Governor’s residence in Harrisburg. Crews evacuated the family and no one was injured. While the investigation was underway, the state police say they “are willing to say at this time that it was an arson.”

“The Harrisburg Bureau of Fire was on the scene and while working to put the fire out, we were safely evacuated by Pennsylvania police and assisted by Capitol police,” Shapiro said in a post on X. “Thank God that no one was injured and the fire was extinguished.”

Shapiro and his wife, Lori, have four children.

The fire broke out overnight on the first night of the Jewish Passover holiday, which Shapiro and his family celebrated at the Governor’s official home in the capital of Harrisburg. Shapiro shared a photo of his family’s cedar table a few hours before.

Police gave no other details about the case.

The fire caused a ‘significant amount of damage’ to part of the residence, state police said. Shapiro was in another part of the hostel when the fire was lit.

From Sunday, fire damage is still visible on the south side of the residence, mainly in a large room that is frequently used to entertain crowds and art exhibitions. There was still a police presence on Sunday afternoon when yellow band knocked off an alley and an officer led a dog outside an iron security fence.
