Prison guards are asking for more protection for years to avoid attacks such as Manchester Arena Bomber’s brother on Saturday, according to a boss of the prison union.
The Prison Officers Association (POA) said Three prison officials were attacked by 28-year-old man Hashem Abedi – the brother of Salman abedi – and that he poured hot cooking oil over the guards before putting it with ‘improvised knives’, possibly from a baking sheet.
Talk to Sky News’ It’s Melbourne On Sunday, the national chairman of the POA, Mark Fairhurst, asked for ‘change’ after the officers were taken to the attack shortly before 11am on the attack in the province of Durham, shortly before 11am on Saturday.
One female officer was discharged at 4pm on Saturday afternoon, while the two other officers remain in a stable condition in hospital.
According to Mr. Fairhurst has one of them a smoked lung.

It is said that the attack occurred in a separation center, a small unit sometimes called a ‘prison in a prison’, which is usually used to house dangerous prisoners and those who are considered to be a risk of radicalizing other prisoners.
Mr. Fairhurst was critical of safety in place in separation centers.
He said: “These separation centers hold the most violent and the worst threat to national security when it comes to terrorist offenders, and we allow them the freedoms and privileges of all on normal location [in prison].
“It has to change, along with the protection that the prison staff be on duty. And we have been asking for a few years for stabbing jackets to be issued to the front line, but it has been denied throughout. It has to change.”
He said that the POA repeatedly said that sting -resistant jackets “look too militaristic and intimidate prisoners”.
“Now we are dealing with murderers, armed robbers, great criminals and terrorists and they are concerned about us who intimidate them because of the uniform we wear. Security is extremely important,” he said.
He added that the POA asked an urgent meeting with Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood about the incident.
“What is terrible to me is that they are allowed the freedoms and privileges that people enjoy at normal location, and they gain access to cooking facilities and the resources to attack fashion weapons to attack staff,” he continued.
“As far as I’m concerned, separation centers are for one reason and one reason alone: to control and contain the most productive and the greatest threat and the most serious offenders of terrorists who possess the system. That’s all we have to do to give them their basic rights, control them and contain them nothing else.”
In a statement on Sunday, a spokesman for the Justice Ministry said: ‘Our thoughts remain with the two prison officers who are still in hospital while recovering.
‘There will be a complete overview of how this attack could happen, along with the separate police investigation.
“The government will do everything needed to keep our hard -working staff safe.”
Against -terrorism -policing leads an investigation into the incident.
Ian Acheson, the former prison -governor and former security chief in Wandsworth Prison, recommended the creation of separation units to the government in 2016.
He told Sky News the units “deviated” in places where the most dangerous prisoners “were allowed too much latitude to form weapons and attack prison officials in this terrible way”.
He said the possibility of Abedi having access to cooking oil was “unthinkable safety course”.
“This attack and other, other attacks like them indicate that the state is not fully in control of Frankland prison, and indeed other prisons with high security where many other terrorist prisoners are detained,” he added.
Ms. Mahmood said on X on Saturday: ‘I am upset about the attack of three brave officers at HMP Frankland today. My mind is with them and their families.
‘The police are investigating now. I will offend the strongest possible punishment. Violence against our staff will never be tolerated. ‘
Hashem Abedi was Previously convictedAlong with two other convicted terrorists, of the attack on a prison officer in Belmarsh Prison in the Southeast London in 2020.
