Police detain climbers who wanted to scale Cologne’s famous cathedral

BERLIN – German police in Cologne detained five Frenchmen and a Belgian woman on Sunday as they tried to climb the city’s famous cathedral.

Police said they were informed by the church’s private security staff that they had spotted young climbers on surveillance cameras in the middle of the night.

Police in riot-equipped police surround the cathedral, and a helicopter hovered on the northern dome until five climbers were detained in the stairwell of the tower. Authorities said the man was between 18 and 27 years old and the woman was 26 years old. Their identities are not consistent with German privacy rules.

Police confiscated the camera, cell phone and locked it. While searching for the building, they found several doors that had apparently broken down, with rock climbing equipment in their backpacks.

This double cathedral is a tourist attraction and is one of the oldest and most important Catholic pilgrimage sites in Nordic. It is considered to be the most famous chapel in Germany.
