The Australian Alexander Volkanovski has recovered the UFC pen weight title with a unanimous decision victory over the Brazilian Diego Diego Lopes in Miami.
After five brutal rounds, Volkanovski resisted a temporary fall and blindness in his right eye after a brutal uppercut at the end of the second to become the champion of the indisputable division with a sum of 48-47, 49-46 and 49-46.
It was a triumph for the 36 -year -old player after losing consecutive Knockout fights, first by the light King Islam Makhachev before giving his pen weight crown to Ilyia Topuria.
“It’s good to be back,” Volkanovski said.
“I had never felt love so much. I was saying all week, even before leaving, I promised my girls back to them.
“But then I realized that it didn’t matter if I brought the belt back. Many people told me, leaving two defeats to knockout, the great rest and then hitting a gun like Diego Lopes.
“For everyone who looks, adversity is a privilege. It really is. I love them all.
“It’s an opportunity. You have adversity, if you return back, even if it doesn’t work, it will only become stronger.
“Look what can happen. This is shit that people will write books.”
Volkanovski made history when the first fighter aged over 35 years to win a fight for the UFC title with 155 pounds and lighter after other bidders had 0-17 in the competition.
He showed a vintage form in the first round before resisting the storm in the second and emerged again on the last two to claim the title he earned previously in 2019.
Lopes showed great hardness to resist Volkanovski’s early alluvion and found some joy every time he could turn the fight into a fight, but the composure and experience of Australian proved to be too much.
“It was an honor to share the octagon with someone like Alexander Volkanovski. This is a man who has so much experience in the UFC,” Lopes said.
“I may have fallen short, but I can see myself return. I will train better, I will improve and be a champion.”
With Topuria going up to light weight, Volkanovski’s first defense of his second reign could come against Mosvar Eloev Russian undefeated or Yair Rodríguez de México.
Rodríguez impressed earlier at night with a unanimous decision victory over Patricio Pitbull, after which he asked for a rematch with Volkanovski on Mexican soil.
