The OHL Draft is bright in Windsor and Essex.

For regional players in recent years, this 15-round progress is one of the most productive draft picks, with a total of 11 players from Windsor and Essex County.
Sun County Panthers Captain Jaakko Wycisk leads the second place in Guelph Storm. It was the highest player in the local field since the Sudbury Wolves finished second in the 2016 draft.

“I still can’t really believe in things, but it’s an exciting time for me and my family,” said Wycisk, who was named League of League Player of the Year. “Super cool, can be picked high, but I can’t do that without the support of my family, former teammates, former coaches and all the mentors.”
After five draft picks, Tecumseh resident Noah Laus also went to Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, who was the seventh overall pick to the Toronto Jr. Canadaens center.
“It’s a relief, a surreal feeling,” Rous said. “I can’t wait to stand up to my feet to the point. I’m so glad to start.”
Both options are the first since 2007, before any player was born, the region has produced the top 10 options. That year, Zack Kassian went to Sudbury in No. 4 at Peterborough, Daniel Maggio took 7th place.
“It was definitely an amazing moment for both of us,” Wycisk said of the first round selection. “He and I have been fighting the past few years and you know, it’s great to share moments like this now.”

But the local name continues to be launched in the two-day draft, with eight Panthers and three players from Windsor Little Flames being selected.
“It’s exciting to see the kind of talent that Windsor and Essex have been producing for years,” Wycisk said.
Sun County’s Eamon Edgar headed to the Barrie Colts in the second round.
“I’m so happy to be selected by Barrie,” Edgar said. “It’s a great organization. It’s a very competitive draft and an honor for the Barrie Colts to choose.”
Reid Hayes was a member of Ottawa’s 67, who sent his little ham with the third round, while Flint Firebirds also used the third round to catch Sun County forward Brayden Lappalainen.
On the second day of the draft Saturday, six more local players went.
First, Sun County forward Alexander Lisi played Owen Sound Attack in the seventh round.
In the ninth round, Peterborough Petes defeated defensive player Eric Wood and defensive players Eric Wood and Storm who returned to Panthers to choose forward Andrew Baker.
Flint also caught a pair of locals with Emmett Mather, son of former Spitfield Shawn Mather, who joined Hayes with Firebirds after being taken away in the 12th round.
Windsor Spitfires ended the draft by capturing a pair of local players. The club chose Spitfes Jr.’s defensive player Luke St. John in the 13th round, and then took Suns County guard Jordan Maine in the 15th round.
