Popular household plants that are actually weeds

At least three quarters of weeds drown our river routes and invading our national parks are garden plants escape.

Although plants such as English ivy and gazania are prohibited in parts of the country because they are invasive, they can still be legally bought in local and online nurseries.

“More than a decade ago, governments recognized the garden and aquarium plants escaped as a great threat to our environment and wildlife, but nothing changed: the nursery industry promised to self -regulate and this approach has failed,” said Imogen Ebsworth of the invasive species council.

“We trust everyday Australians to have a botany title or to pay close attention to warnings in the small print of plants labels to prevent their gardens from becoming a time bomb.”

She said that governments had finally agreed that regulation was the only way to prevent another Lantana from destroying the environment.

“There are thousands of ‘safe’ plants available that will still allow people to have incredible and diverse gardens and the industry to prosper without making new weeds spread throughout the country.”
