The 40-year-old faces one count of assault and one count of obstruction of police officers, the department said.
The incident occurred Thursday night when officers patrolled the east side of the city’s downtown area, trying to detain a man for jaywalking.
Police said he was wanted for other crimes and tried to escape but was caught, which they believed he had set fire to the police uniform with flammable substances.
The suspect escaped, the officer put out the fire by himself, and the other officers later arrested the man.
Police said an officer was recovering at home after being treated by paramedics, while a second officer suffered no physical harm.
Police said the suspect was treated for Burns and was detained on Saturday.
