The Manchester Arena bomber terrorist brother allegedly seriously injured three prison officers in an attack in a high security prison.
Hashem Abedi – who serves at least 55 years for the murders of 22 people in the atrocities in May 2017 – threw hot cooking oil over three officers on HMP Frankland on Saturday, according to the Prison Officers’ Association (POA).
He then yielded weapons with homemade weapons and continued to stab the officers, who sustained life -threatening injuries, including burns, oblique and stab wounds, the union said.
Abedi is one of the only prisoners in the country held in a specialist separation unit for extremists – where the attack allegedly occurred – in Category A Prison in County Durham.
The prison service confirmed that three prison officials were treated in hospital after an attack by a prisoner in Frankland. One female officer was fired at 4pm on Saturday.
A spokesman said: “The police are investigating now, so it would be inappropriate to comment further. Violence in prison will not be tolerated, and we will always use the strongest punishment for attacks on our hardworking staff.”
Abedi serves 24 life sentences after being convicted of 22 counts of murder, attempted murder and planning to cause an explosion, which is likely to endanger the life of the Manchester Arena attack, which he conspired to perform with his older brother Salman Abedi.
Poa’s national chairman, Mark Fairhurst, described the alleged attack on Saturday as “cowardly and evil”, saying that it shows “the dangers who face brave prisoners daily”.
He added: “Separation centers keep the most dangerous offenders of terrorists who simply do not want to change their ideology and, like this event, are determined to give violence to those who keep them safe.
‘We must now review the freedoms that allow us to allow the Separation Center prisoners. I believe that access to cooking facilities and items that can threaten the lives of staff should be removed immediately.
‘These prisoners only need to receive their basic rights, and we need to concentrate on control and inclusion instead of trying to experience it. Things to change. ‘
Frankland is one of three prisons in England and Wales containing a separation unit intended to house the most dangerous prisoners in extremist ideologies, which was first announced in 2017 after an overview of extremism in prisons.
While the three units have a total of 28 places, they were occupied by just nine men and the unit at HMP Full Sutton was completely closed when the facilities were last inspected in 2022.
A report in The times Earlier this month, the Centers in Frankland, instead of extremists, were actually used to house prisoners who received death threats after refusing to join Islamic gangs.
Criminal lawyer Tony Wyatt, who discovered that separation centers are being used for this purpose while visiting customers in Frankland, said to the outlet: ‘There are so many people who are members of Muslim gangs in prison, you just can’t contain the problem.
“If the solution was to separate them – and I do not suggest that it is, you would need the entire prisons dedicated to the separation. And not just one prison, multiple prisons. That is the scope of that. ‘
Justice Minister Shabana Mahmood said on Saturday that she was “upset about the attack of three brave officers at HMP Frankland”, adding: ‘My mind is with them and their families.
‘The police are investigating now. I will offend the strongest possible punishment. Violence against our staff will never be tolerated. ‘
