Disappointing pepits dispatched by Mortal saints

On their own, they are formidable.

Together they are deadly.

Wellington Saints Shea Ili and Hyrum Harris have teamed up to help dispatch Otago’s pepits at Edgar Center this afternoon.

Ili, who is back playing in the New Zealand National Basketball League for the first time since 2019, poured 31 points on a wonderful show of filming.

He was impeccable of the free move line and beyond the bow.

Harris was so good. The center added 24 points and 13 rebounds.

The victory saw Wellington cement his place at the top of the classification.

It’s still too early in the season, but they look like a side that can deepen.

Nuggets, well, they look more like a place in the middle somewhere.

Don Carey Jun led the scoring by Nuggets with 26 points and striker Jonathan Janssen knocked down 20.

The first signs were not promising for the home team.

The saints took 15 seconds to find a hole in defense of Nuggets and Nicholas Marshall connected it to three points.

It seemed very easy and it was. They went to a 9-0 advantage.

Darcy Knox put the nuggets on the board with three points of the corner.

Carey drained a triple too. He shook ili with a fake – a rare victory for the nugts against the talented shipowner.

Ili got a pass around a defender to Harris under the rim and he put him.

Beautiful combination. Deadly even.

Janssen drilled a triple and the nuggets were back in the quarter.

They fell for one and that was as close as possible.

The saints dominated the rear half of the opening period and took a 32-21 advantage at the break.

Ili buried three at the beginning of the second period to put the nuggets back.

The saints seemed more comfortable with the pace of the game.

Jaylen Sebree regretted a third foul at the beginning of the second quarter, but managed to play the rest of the game without registering a room.

Izayah Mauriohoo Le Afa hit three from Deep and Rangimarie Dougall-Mita launched an open look.

This was a very disappointing defense and the game was escaping quickly.

The saints brought 50 in the middle of the second period, when Harris finished a quick break with a lay-up.

Carey responded with a delicious rim trip and added an extra from the free bid line.

Nuggets began the third quarter behind 55-45. They did well to meet with 15 points unanswered at the end of the middle.

José Perez shook an attempt of three points in front of the edge and then burned Ili on the other, which then placed the three free throws.

There were many small moments like those that increased rapidly. But the saints had a lot more talent on the court and exploded at the end of the third.

They spilled 20 points in five minutes to lead 84-63, with 10 minutes remaining.

Nuggets won the final period by 36-27, but the game had already been essentially won.

• Nuggets defeated the saints 38 to 30 in the quick league. They won six of their seven games and are in second place in the classification. Christian Martin scored with 16 points.
