WASHINGTON (AP) — A painting by President Donald Trump on Friday depicts the moment he assassinated last summer — hitting an official portrait of one of his predecessors, Barack Obama.
Hanging a new presidential similarity without advance notice is unusual, and Trump puts himself in that space as he once again violates the norm. By tradition, portraits of the two former presidents are on display in the foyer – Trump is also in a unique position as a former president.
The portrait of Obama is on display on the foyer of the state staircase near the staircase after its unveiling in 2022. The White House said it was still in the foyer, but had been moved to the opposite wall, with former President George W. Bush once hanging portraits.
The plan was to move Bush’s portrait to his father’s former president, George HW Bush, which reached the residence on the stairs.
In an article on the official account on X, the White House announced a photo of a new painting that read “some new artwork from the White House” and a pair of emoji eyes. The painting captures the consequences of Trump’s lifelong attempt during the July rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Trump was injured in his ear and rushed into the sky with his fist, saying, “Fight, fight!”
These words became a key rally in his successful re-election campaign.
The White House said the original painting on the canvas was done by artist Marc Lipp and donated to the White House by the Blue Gallery in Delray Beach, Florida.
Lipp’s online biography as part of the Blue Gallery website describes him as “modern pop art, translating a love of art through painting and sculpture.” Pollack is a writer and school safety advocate whose daughter Meadow is one of the students who died in a 2018 mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.
Regardless of party affiliation, the current president is often kind among the direct predecessors who unveiled his portrait, but Trump has not offered courtesy to Obama.
Then-President Joe Biden and his wife Jill welcomed former President Obama and his wife, former first lady Michelle Obama, to the White House to unveil their portraits in 2022, just as Democrat Bill Clinton did for the young presidents of Republicans George W. Bush and Clinton.
Obamas held the unveiling of George W. Bush and his wife Laura at the White House in 2012.
There was no explanation for the suspension when Trump did not receive Obama during his first term.
Biden left the office about three months ago and it might take several years to commission and complete the portrait of the former lady.
Trump also participated in paintings outside the White House.
A painting with other portraits of the president at the Colorado Capitol was cancelled last month after he complained about his similarity being “intentionally distorted.”
The White House portrait collection begins with George Washington, the first president of the United States. Congress bought his portrait.
Other portraits of the early president and the First Lady were usually brought to the White House as gifts. Since the 1960s, the White House Historical Association has paid the price for most paintings. The first portraits funded by the association were Lyndon Johnson and Lady Bird Johnson, John F.
Portraits of the president and the first lady are seen by millions of White House visitors, although not all are on display. Some are being protected or being stored.
Those corridors and rooms exhibited in public areas of luxury homes, such as the ground floor and its vermeil and Chinese rooms, as well as the state floor above, which feature famous green, blue and red rooms, eastern rooms and state restaurants.
