Denver – The people in Colorado will soon have to undergo a background check and complete the state -sanctioned safety course to buy most semi -automatic weapons with disassembled magazines on a bill signed by the Democratic Governor Jared Polis on Thursday.
Colorado, who saw some of the oldest mass shootings in the country – including the killings in 2022 at LGBTQ+ Nightspot Club Q in Colorado Springs and slaughter at Columbine High School in 1999 – joins almost a dozen other states, requiring some level of training for safety or training for a training for safety.
One of the most restrictive arms control measures to be adopted in the country as part of the long-standing democratic campaign to limit violence with a gun, the law came in full effect in August 2026.
“We cannot afford not to do our best to change the ongoing impact of weapons violence,” said Bill Bill’s sponsor Tom Sullivan, whose son Alex was killed in a 2013 shooting at the Aurora Theater. Speaking of the signing of the bill, he added that the measure was “only the next step we have taken with this effort.”
Republicans and other opponents claim that the measure violates the second amendment, and at first an organization, the owners of Rocky Mountain pistols, was considering a legal challenge.
Several layers of obstacles that the law requires to buy these weapons, and the accompanying costs and potential lags make “this is more or less an administrative prohibition,” says Ian Escalante, executive director of the weapon rights group.
Previous attempts to ensure a comprehensive ban on certain semi-automatic weapons, as made in deeply democratic countries, including New York and California, have ignited in a more personal Colorado, where many, including the governor, have something from the libertarian series.
“I really think that this bill will make the Colorado community more festive and will prevent both accidents and reduce violence with weapons, and ultimately means saving life while protecting our rights for a second change,” Polis said.
The proposal was soaked in a flat ban on the sale of most semi -automatics with disassembled magazines, including rifles and some pistols. Proponents claim that resolving only permanently attached magazines will force a possible shooter to recharge a bullet on a bullet.
The last bill signed is a discount on polis and other Democrats that are too far.
