Former MLB stars Octavio Hop and Tony Blanco are one of the more than 100 people who died in a roof in a nightclub in the capital of the Dominican Republic.

The championship award-winning worker Hop, 51, was reportedly rescued from the ruins of the Jet Set Nightclub, in Santa Domingo, but later died while transferred to the hospital. Dominican authorities later confirmed his death.

At least 113 people were killed and more than 255 were injured in the incident that happened early Tuesday. The crowd was at the club to see how the Merengue singer Rubby Pérez, who performed when the roof collapsed, said. He was also killed in the collapse.

It is not clear what caused the collapse.

According to Juan Manuel Méndez, director of the Center for Emergency Operations, rescue staff continued to seek survivors.

“We assume that many of them are still alive, which is why the authorities will not give up here until a single person stays under the rubble,” he said.

Local outlets reported that Hunel may have been trapped for more than 11 hours before being discovered by emergencies.

Doel was well known to baseball fans, after pitching in the MLB for more than a decade, for 13 different teams, the second most teams played by any player.

He made his Major League debut with the New York Mets in 1999, and was later traded with the Astros before the 2000 season -and he spent five seasons with them, his longest time with any team.

He continued with the Oakland Athletics, New York Yankees, Kansas City Royals, Atlanta Braves, Chicago White Sox, Pittsburgh Pirates, Los Angeles Dodgers, Colorado Rockies, Toronto Blue Jays and St. Louis Cardinals before completing his career career in 2012.

Hunel won the 2011 World Series with the Cardinals and two years later in 2013 became one of the few players in history who won a World Series and a World Baseball Classic.

The Ministry of Sport and Recreation of the Dominican Republic later confirmed the death of Blanco.

The 43-year-old Blanco played in the minor leagues from 2000 to 2008 and in 2005 with the Washington Nationals after the majors for 56 games. After his MLB career, he played in Japan and the Dominican Republic.

Another victim of the tragedy was Nelsy Cruz, the Governor of Montecristi, who died by the authorities. Cruz is the sister of the former MLB-designated Hitter and All-Star Nelson Cruz.

After the incident, Dominican President Luis Abinad wrote on X that all rescue agencies “work tirelessly” to help those affected.

Carolina Mejía de Garrigó, mayor of Santo Domingo, added: “Our city wakes up from a terrible tragedy that took place at the Jet Set Nightclub. My deepest sympathy goes out to the families still waiting for news of their loved ones.”
