The former All Blacks John Mayhew

The Mayhew Association with North Harbor Rugby began in 1985, serving as a union doctor from the beginning. In recognition of their invaluable contributions. He was honored as a lifetime NHRU member in 2015.

Mayhew served as All Black team doctor from 1988 to 2004, participating in 131 tests and more than 200 matches, including four World Cup campaigns. He was also involved with the Warriors after his time with All Blacks came to an end.

His most profile player who required medical advice was the late Jonah Lomu. The extreme was diagnosed with nephrotic syndrome in 1995 and Mayhew was one of the few people aware of Lomu’s chronic health problems from the beginning. Mayhew became a close friend and served as a doorway at Lomu’s funeral in 2015.

In 2016, Mayhew was appointed official of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his services to sports medicine, reflecting his significant contributions to the field.

In a statement, North Harbor Rugby Union said that “Dr. Mayhew’s legacy will be forever intertwined in North Harbor Rugby’s fabric and New Zealand Rugby history. His passion, dedication and unshakable support left a lasting impact that will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing it.”
