Over the years, the size of crowds at large campaign rallies
Good evening. I am Mayor Lisa, the producer of the Council.
We are watching the Conservative Party rally in Edmonton tonight. As the party said, there are 12,000 people out there that will be one of the bigger campaign rallies in Canadian history.
I was curious about the meaning of this number, so I went to see past campaign rally.
In 1968, Pierre Trudeau’s first federal campaign held a rally in Toronto, when Trudeaumania had 50,000 or more people at its peak. The next time in 1979 at Maple Leaf Gardens, he held another in Toronto. The rally was attended by about 18,000 people.
In recent years, Justin Trudeau also held some large gatherings – in 2015, a gathering called “The Biggest Man in a Generation” was held in Brampton, with at least 5,000 viewers.
During Jack Layton’s 2011 Orange Wave run, some rally was among thousands of attendees.
Just last week, Poilievre held a rally in Oshawa, with 6,500 people showing up in support.
