Ontario offers $11B in relief to businesses stung by U.S. tariffs

Toronto – The Ontario government said it would provide about 11 billion Canadian dollars in relief and support U.S. tariff stund businesses.

Prime Minister Doug Ford said the measures would help workers and businesses deal with U.S. President Donald Trump “attack on the Ontario economy.”

The government said it would postpone selected provincial taxes within six months from April 1 to October 1, which would save about $9 billion in businesses.

It will also provide employers with $2 billion in kickbacks through the Workplace Safety and Insurance Commission to help keep workers working, it said.

Ford said last week he was pleased to see Canada not face any new “reciprocal” tariffs from Trump that have been hit in many other countries around the world.

But Ford said he remains concerned about the province’s auto sector, the industry faces a 25% auto import tax
