The Auckland Football Club is working to identify and ban anyone responsible for antisocial incidents during Saturday’s match against Sydney.
In a statement to RNZ, police said they continued their investigation into incidents who saw one person trapped by aggression and another by disorder.
“The victim, who is Australian national, was taken to Middlemore Hospital. He had to undergo surgery for facial injuries suffered in the attack,” police said.
“A 46 -year -old man was arrested at the stadium about the incident.”
Police said they had not discarded the accusations.
Social media videos emerged from both sets of fans acting aggressively and insulted with security trying to intervene. The objects were also thrown and the children were present in the Auckland FC seat block.
Auckland FC chief executive Nick Becker said in a statement that the club did not tolerate any form of antisocial behavior.
“The Auckland FC is extremely disappointed to learn of one or two incidents isolated from antisocial behavior in Saturday’s match involving the club and fans traveling from Western Sydney Wanderers.
“Auckland FC has worked hard to cultivate a positive and inclusive family atmosphere for more than 200,000 football fans who enjoyed an amazing season at Go Media Stadium. This includes our most passionate football fans, thousands of Auckland families and beginners, Wellington and beyond.
“This is the first time we have had incidents involving fans’ antisocial behavior and it’s something we take very seriously. This does not represent our values or who we are as a club.
“We are working in close collaboration with the police and the GO Media Stadium team to see if any lesson can be learned, especially in the way we manage traveling fans, and seek to identify and ban anyone who is responsible.”
The club chief said that if fans need help or assistance at any time to send the word “assistance” along with the seat number or place to 260, and the safety team will be dispatched.
Western Sydney Wanderers FC told RNZ in a statement that they are supporting their travel supporter that was beaten on MT Smart Stadium on Saturday.
“Western Sydney Wanderers FC is aware of an incident involving one of the club’s travel supporters that took place at the Go Media Stadium in Auckland on Saturday afternoon.”
“The club is in direct contact with the supporter involved and is currently in contact with local authorities and stakeholders relevant to thoroughly reviewing the matter.
“Western Sydney Wanderers is committed to ensuring the safety and good -to be all supporters and we will continue to provide full support to the affected individual.”
The director of Auckland stadiums for Tātaki Auckland Unlimited, James Parkinson, said his security at the scene worked with police to rapidly decrease incidents, which also resulted in eight evictions.
“Saturday’s isolated incidents contrast sharply with extremely positive and respectful behavior that we witness to fans throughout this football season.”
“We will review these incidents and work closely with Auckland FC to implement agreed changes, so that the focus returns to football correctly and fans of the family environment have enjoyed throughout the season,” Parkinson said.
The A-League match between Auckland and the Western Sydney Wanderers ended 1-1.
Auckland remains at the top of the stairs with 46 points, five points ahead of Western United, with four remaining games before the A-League finals.
