Carney, Starmer discuss deeper trade ties in response to Trump’s tariff war

OTTAWA – Prime Minister Mark Carney said he spoke with his British opponents on Sunday about the consequences of the US global tariff movement.

A reader in Carney’s office said he had a discussion with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer about the “unreasonable trade lawsuit” in the United States and the need to strengthen trade relations between Canada and the United Kingdom.

“Partnership with long-term, reliable allies is more important than ever,” Carney said in a social media post.

The conversation comes days after U.S. President Donald Trump initiated “reciprocity” tariffs on countries around the world to address his claimed unfair trade practices.

This move brings the stock market to the weekend around the world.

Readers say Kaney and Steimer also discussed Ukraine’s shared support for Ukraine in the war with Russia, and the two leaders agreed to keep in touch.
