A petition of Parliament to change ACC legislation for volunteer firefighters has reached almost 30,000 signatures.
Petition to Parliament, launched by Katherine Lamont of the Queenstown Volunteer Fire Brigade, said 12,000 volunteer firefighters were excluded from certain benefits from ACC because they were classified as non -employees.
The petition is asking that volunteer firefighters obtain the same coverage and benefits of ACC as their colleagues paid.
United Fire Brigadas Association also expressed its support for the petition.
“We are proudly supporting our members’ initiative, as it has a strong alignment with UFBA’s strategic priority in our justice campaign and equity to get more coverage volunteer firefighters under the ACC.
“As a collective voice, we must be heard. It is important that this petition be led and supported by our members, so it is not just UFBA as an organization asking for change – it is the 12,000 individuals and their families that deserve better support.”
United Fire Brigades Association’s chairman, Peter Dunne, said the response to the petition was extraordinary.
“We are absolutely enchanted.”
Dunne hoped that the weight of public opinion would influence the government and bring changes.
Dunne said 86 % of firefighters were volunteers and it was fair that they were treated equally.
The petition remains open for signatures until April 30.
