President Donald Trump announced Wednesday the term “grocery” reappeared, from humor to incredible reactions.

He noted that he used the word during the presidential campaign, and he once again reflected on his obsession: “It’s an old-fashioned term, but a beautiful term: groceries. So it’s a pack that packs a lot of different things.”

He talked about the rising price of campaign grocery prices and claimed in his speech that it had fallen since he returned to power. “Groceries cross the roof, and I ran for it. I spent a lot of time talking about the word ‘groce’, and now the energy costs are lower. The groceries collapse.”

However, there is no evidence to support his statement that grocery prices are falling. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s food price outlook was updated on March 25, reporting that grocery costs are expected to grow faster than the average growth rate this year.

Analysis of the Washington political and policy newspaper The Hill seems to prove this. The newspaper wrote in an April 2 article on X that Trump’s tariff plan “could cost families more than $3,000.”

Many users questioned Trump’s description of “grocery” as old-fashioned, interpreting it as a sign of his disengagement from everyday shopping.

Late night TV shows, such as The Daily Show, introduces comedy festival shows about Trump’s rhetoric and uses satire to criticize his gaze for the semester.

“I mean who is using the word, except everyone, except everyone, except everyone,” host Michael Kosta said on Wednesday night of the show. “You might think that Trump had never heard of the word ‘grocery’ before the 2024 campaign, just thinking it might be a new language…there is actually no other word.”

Although Trump uses “grocery” as a conversation point for populism, many Americans relate Trump’s tariff policies to higher groceries prices, which leads to serious dissatisfaction. For example, in a recent Reuters/IPSOS poll, 70% of respondents said they believed tariffs would increase the cost of groceries and daily commodities.

His aggressive trade measures, especially tariffs on Canadian, Mexico and China imports, have been criticized for exacerbating inflation. This led to a drop in his approval rating for economic management, of which 56% disapprove of his handling of the economy.
