According to the local coalition, the Stellantis Windsor assembly plant will be closed for two weeks in the latest news on automatic tariffs by U.S. President Donald Trump.
Unifor Local 444, a union representing factory workers, announced in a Facebook post that they have been notified by Stellantis that the factory will begin closing on April 7.
They were told there were several factors that were playing out, but the main driver was Trump’s announcement of U.S. tariffs Wednesday afternoon.
Trump confirmed that tariffs on all foreign-made vehicles will take effect at midnight on Wednesday.
“This and continue to create uncertainty throughout the automotive industry. This will affect not only our factories, but also the U.S. and Mexico,” Unifor Local 444 Post said.
They added that the union is closely monitoring the situation.
Stellantis recently stopped production of its next-generation electrified Jeep SUV at its Brampton assembly plant, citing the need to reevaluate its product strategy in a dynamic environment.
At the time of the February announcement, the company did not give a deadline for when production will resume.
The Brampton plant, which has been preparing for the new production line since early 2024, has had about 3,000 employees before closing.
Unifor President Lana Payne expressed concern about the spillover effect of Brampton’s delayed start, which would be for local parts suppliers related to vehicle production, including Windsor assembly plants.
Stelantis was created after the merger of Fiat Chrysler and the French PSA.
