Carney holds meetings in Ottawa before latest Trump tariffs

Ottawa – Liberal leader Mark Carney will wear the prime minister’s hat on Wednesday in response to the latest round of tariffs from U.S. President Donald Trump.

Carney will chair a virtual meeting of the Prime Minister’s Committee on Canada-U.S. relations at 3 p.m. ET. After Trump announced the news, he is expected to meet with his Canadian-U.S. cabinet committee on relations and national security around 5:30 p.m.

It is unclear whether Carney will update Canada’s response to the latest tariffs on Wednesday night, or whether new measures will wait until Thursday.

In a campaign in Winnipeg on Tuesday, Carney confirmed Canada would retaliate against any additional U.S. tariffs, but guaranteed that the reaction would not be inferior to Canadian industry and workers compared to Americans.

“We will do very intentional in the measures we fight for Canada…and to protect (and) the measures that have the least impact in Canada,” he said.

Readers in the Prime Minister’s Office said Carney spoke with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on the eve of Trump’s announcement of an increase in trade between the two countries during a “challenge period” with the Americans.

Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre has pledged to speed up renegotiation of a free trade agreement between Canada, the United States and Mexico.

“Anyway, Kusma must be renegotiated next year. Why wait? Why not finish it now? Why not end the uncertainty of the paralysis of both sides of the border and also lose our work today?” he said in his keynote speech in Toronto.

“We should set a certain date to finalize a new agreement and I will propose that both countries stop tariffs when we finalize this deal,” he said.
