Girl, 11, who went missing after entering River Thames named by police

An 11-year-old girl who was still missing after she entered the river the Thames was named as Kaliyah Coa by Metropolitan Police.

Kaliyah, who played during a school day, played with a young boy and girl near the water, residents said.

Shaleen Rajaendram, 59, who lives next to Kerry Benadjaoud on Barge House Road near where the incident occurred, said: “I heard above that a man screams” wait, wait, police are coming. “

The schoolgirl entered the water near Barge House Causeway, near London City Airport in East London.

Emergency services were called at 13.23 hours on Monday with London Ambulance Service, London Fire Brigade, the RNLI and the Coastguard who searched for the missing schoolgirl.

According to a police statement, officers now lead a recovery mission along the Thames to find Kaliyah.

Chief Superintendent Dan Card said: “Our specialist officials support Kaliyah’s family through this deeply disturbing time and our minds go out to all who are affected by what happened.

‘We are committed to finding Kaliyah and working with partners to do a thorough search across a wide area – using drone technology and boats.

‘I would like to thank the members of the public, our first respondents and colleagues from other emergency services, as they respond quickly to perform a large -scale search during a lot of pressure and disturbing time.

‘We also appreciate that it influenced the wider community that was very supportive. You will see extra officers in the area in the coming days – if you have any concerns then talk to them. ‘
