Employees at the Ministry of Health and Human Services began receiving mass cuts on Tuesday, days after HHS secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., announced that 10,000 people would lose their jobs, including employees working on tobacco, mental health and infectious diseases.
The abbreviations are expected to influence 3,500 employees of the Food and Medicines Administration and 2400 employees of the Centers for the Control and Prevention of Diseases-One Fifth of the Workforce in Both Public Health divisions that fall into HHS.
In total and including approximately 10,000 people who have left the last few months through early retirement or deferred resignation programs, general HHS staff will fall from 82,000 to about 62,000 – or about fourth of their workforce.
While the news of the cuts spread, employees stood in long lines outside their offices in Washington, Colombia, Maryland and Georgia, some waiting for hours as security determines whether they can be released into the building or not. In some cases, the employees were turned after being informed that they were no longer a job.
