Carney’s lack of leadership in the Chiang case is astounding

Liberal MP Paul Chiang announced that he would resign as the candidate’s resignation by midnight on Monday, showing a huge failure of Mark Carney’s leadership.

Chiang spent four days as a liberal candidate for Markham-Unionville, and Carney defended him all morning afterward.

It is not difficult to keep yourself a distance from someone who advocates kidnapping their opponents and handing them over to Chinese bounties, but liberals brag. The resignation was only after the RCMP confirmed they were investigating Tsing Ang’s comments, which could have violated several parts of the law by consulting others for crimes.

“Every day, I keep my integrity,” Chiang said in his statement about his resignation.

This comment is inconsistent with what Chiang did, one of the most anti-democratic actions I can think of by an elected official.

The clear comments were posted in January at a Chinese media event. In a statement issued by the Toronto Democratic Association in China, they exposed the world of English speaking, which highlighted Ziange’s words and encouraged people to hand over democratic advocates and conservative candidate Joe Tay to people.

“For everyone here, if you take him to the Chinese consulate in Toronto, you can ask for a $1 million bounty,” he said.

Tay was placed in his bounty by Chinese authorities last December, about 1 million Canadian dollars, or about 185,000 Canadian dollars. He and other democratic activists in China, especially Hong Kong, have bounties overhead, pleasing to the eyes for anyone who can bring them into the authorities.

That’s what Chiang encourages people to do, and it’s Carney’s defense on Monday, though at least he was asked about the applicability of Chiang as a candidate after comments.

“Look, this is a honest man, he is for this community, his community, the police for the police… As the senior police officer I call a senior police officer, he is for more than a quarter of a century.”

The fact that Chiang has been a senior police officer for 28 years has not been given no links because of his comments, which makes the matter worse. A retired policeman advocates that people hand over political rivals to Chinese authorities, which would be unimaginable for Canadian police and elected officials.

Gabriel Yiu summed this up nicely in his initial statement on TADC last Friday.

“This is another example of China’s undue influence in our elections,” Yiu said. “Our political party is detained in the sense that they are afraid to run candidates that are not favored by China.”

The ongoing political intervention in China is a huge problem and we still haven’t taken it seriously. In the 2019 general election, then-Liberal leader Justin Trudeau and his team introduced concerns about CSIS for one of their Toronto candidates, while China intervened in his nomination.

Trudeau got the information and found nothing about it.

In fact, the candidate – Han Dong, who has been rejecting any help from China – was allowed to sit at the core meeting of liberalism and run again in 2021, and did nothing until the 2023 media stories were released in 2023.

Neoliberal leaders react with the last reaction until the media story is forced to do anything. As Trudeau’s former cabinet minister Jody Wilson-Raybould commented, the new guy looks a lot like the old man.

Carney abdicated the leader by refusing to take action. By refusing to act on issues related to China, it has created real concerns about his position related to Beijing.
