Matildas’s vice channel, Emily Van Egmond, says that Sam Kerr “should definitely be standing” like the pattern of the national side after a violent reaction that suggests that he should give up the paper.
Football Australia and Kerr issued a joint statement on Monday, with the injured striker talking about his “repentance” for an incident in London in 2023, where she was accused, but was not guilty of racially aggravated harassment of a police officer.
Kerr has not played since he suffered a serious knee injury in early 2024 and is currently in the camp with the Matildas before Friday’s game against Korea in Sydney.
And although the Federation and his teammates have no problems with their remaining captain when he returns, some fans and commentators of the media have asked to feel stripped of the paper for discrediting the team.
“I should definitely give up,” said Van Egmond in Double Bay on Tuesday morning.
“I think the Federation has come out and said what they had to say, and Sammy has also said to say.
“As teammates and a team, we are in full support from her.
“It’s amazing (having it in the camp) not only for her but for the team.
“It has been really pleasant to have it around us, and we will continue to support it with what you need before you return to the field.
“She is a bubbly personality and she is our captain, so it is really good to have her and it is nice to see her in such a high mood.
“The Australia Football Federation issued its statement the other day and I think he speaks for himself.”
Van Egmond has no idea when the international superstar will return and said that Kerr has earned the right to address the team about any problem every time he feels comfortable in doing so.
“Sammy is a professional at the top, so if you ever need to say something, then you feel more than comfortable with the team and have our full support and the federation,” he said.
The Matildas would desperately would recover it in the field as soon as possible after their poor campaign in the Shebelieves Cup.
The Australians were defeated 4-0 by Japan and were given a verification of reality before the Asian Cup next year in their homeland, and the team was still waiting for a permanent chief coach to be designated.
Tom Sermanni currently works as an interim chief coach.
“Time is needed, but saying that, if you get the correct candidate, then I think anything is possible,” said Van Egmond.
“We have a really good group of girls who are quite adaptable and have been put in similar positions in the past … so it is not impossible.”
