3 missing US soldiers found dead in Lithuania, search continues for 4th soldier

Three of the four US army soldiers who disappeared during a training mission near Pabrad, Lithuania were found dead on Monday last week, but demand continues for the fourth soldier, the army said.

Their identities were not released.

The armored vehicle to restore Hercules, in which the soldiers were when they disappeared, was removed from the swamp early on Monday morning after six days of work to extract it, the army said.

Soldiers, based in Fort Stewart, Georgia, disappeared on Tuesday during a training exercise, the army said.

On Wednesday, their 63-tone vehicles were found submerged in about 15 feet of water and “clay mud” in a training area, the army said.

“Most probably the M88 entered the swamp,” and the vehicle “may have just gone diagonally to the bottom,” Lithuanian Defense Minister Dovil Sakalien told ABC News by phone last week.

Efforts for multi -day demand were complicated by the muddy terms of the swamp, staff said.

The army said it was introducing assets last week, including a “high capacity pump, cranes, more than 30 tonnes of gravel and experts in the subject”.

“The Polish armed forces also voluntarily participated in military engineers, which attracts an additional water pump, tracks vehicles for recovery, other additional equipment and supplies needed with 150 people,” the army said.

On Saturday, a US Navy diving team arrived on the scene, joining Lithuanian divers, the army said.
