A woman who used a kettle to kill a man during a violent attack was jailed for at least 18 years.
Elizabeth Sweeney, 36, denied the murder of Neil Jolly, 49, in June 2023 at his apartment in Aberdeen’s Marischal Court.
Prosecutors said father-of-three Mr. Jolly was repeatedly hit on the head and body, kicked on the head and hit with a kettle or unknown implementation.
Judge Andrew Miller said the ‘long -lasting and sustained assault’ led the victim to sustained more than 70 stumps of power injuries, including his head, neck, torso, arms and hands.

The judge told Sweeney: “You sustained a serious and fatal brain injury and other head injuries that were of a kind of medical evidence delivered during your trial, which was expected to be due to a high-impact road traffic collision or a fall of height, along with fractions to a rib and to a structure in his throat.”
The murder is believed to have occurred between the evening of Thursday, June 22, 2023 and the early hours of the next morning on the high block of apartments.
The body of Mr. Jolly was eventually discovered by officers on Monday, June 26, 2023 after Sweeney himself raised the alarm.

Judge Miller noted that Sweeney Mr. Jolly’s body soaked with water and tried to clean blood from the bathroom and kettle.
The judge said: “During the interim weekend, you did nothing to seek help for Neil Jolly or to allow his body to be restored.
“Instead, you seem to have spent the same way that weekend as you spent any other weekend, and apparently little, if any, thought of Neil Jolly’s fate or your part of it.”

Sweeney filed a special defense of self -defense, but was convicted of murder last month after a trial at the Supreme Court in Aberdeen.
Judge Miller noted that the jurors’ claim rejected her that Mr. Jolly provoked her violent behavior by allegedly sexually attacking her while she was asleep.
Instead, it is said that jurors are satisfied that Sweeney advance malice and bad will towards Mr. Jolly showed by attacking him on at least two occasions in the two -week or so before his death.

Judge Miller noted the report on the social work of criminal justice that emphasizes Sweeney’s ‘difficult personal background’ and longtime drug addiction.
The judge added: “Although your general description, which rejected the jury, retained from the beginning of this incident, the report states that you take full responsibility for Neil Jolly’s death and that you repent for your actions.”

After the lawsuit, detective inspector William Murdoch said: “We acknowledge this sentence today and hope that it brings a little comfort to the family and friends of Neil Jolly.”
