The city of Peterborough declared a state of emergency in response to a frozen storm that caused trees to fall and cut off thousands of momentum in the city.
Officials said the recovery is expected to take at least a few days.
“As the accumulation of ice is shooting down power lines, trees and trees, resulting in power outages and unsafe conditions, New York City encourages residents to avoid unnecessary travel,” officials said in a statement issued Sunday.
Authorities say the city public works department that maintains roads and sidewalks received more than 1,000 calls within 24 hours, and the Peterborough Fire Department has received about 700 calls.
Dangerous conditions prompted the authorities to close all urban parks until further notice.

- March 30 (Sunday) March 30 at 6 a.m. (Overnight Reception Center), Ballroom Health Planet Arena, 911 Monahan Road.

- Peterborough Sport and Wellness Center, 775 Brealey Dr.
“Thanks to the Hydro One crew and our public works team, who have been working around the clock throughout the important weather event,” Mayor Jeff Leal wrote in a statement. “I asked residents to avoid unnecessary travel as the crew works to address fallen trees and power lines. Stay safe. Call friends and loved ones to check them out.”
“It could take several days to clean out from this storm,” he added.
